Final Cut Tip o' the Day 5/27 - Navigating with Markers
I tried to make a different tutorial on Saturday about adding quick transitions to text, but it wouldn't go through, so maybe I'll do it again tomorrow. BUt for today:
Did you know that if you place a marker in the timeline ruler (meaning when you place a marker, make sure no clips are selected, and the marker will appear where the playhead is in the timeline) you can right click in the timeline ruler (where the numbers are) and go directly to any marker with a single click.
This is very useful if you are comparing parts of a timeline that are separated by a long space and you want to be able to jump back and forth without scrubbing. Or, if you want to go back to a certain spot after you have done some other editing.
Make sure you name your markers. You do this by hitting the "m" key twice. Once to set the marker, and the second time to name it. When you right click in the timeline ruler, you will see the names of the markers at the bottom.

re: markers
Okay, for an otherwise FCP luddite, I got that one. I've used markers and now know how to use them better. It reminds me of another subject: a producer used blade markers in a timeline but decided not to make the cuts. The project was saved multiple times before completion. The blade marks remained in the timeline through multiple saves and were visually distracting. Is there a way to remove them from the timeline?
Deleting edit points
Are you talking about the "through edit" marks, which are the red triangles on both sides of an edit point? Those triangels tell you that the abutting frames are actually the proper first and next frame. So you can just delete the edit point. Snap to the edit point, or press the up/down arrow keys in the timeline to go from previous/next edit point, press "v" on the keyboard to select the edit point, and press delete.
Note: when you select an edit point you should see two brown brackets covering the red triangles. You won't see the whole clip turn brown, just the splice.
Reply if this does not make sense and I will repost another way.
