Preparing for VMX

On this page you will find resources and downloads to help prepare your center for VMX. You will need to do the following (in any order) to qualify for a VMX installation:

- Fill out the AMO Snapshot Survey

- Fill out the Statewide Participation Technical Questionnaire

- Provide an MPEG-2 video (preferably less than 45 minutes) from your station after calibrating the audio throughout your workflow. Below you will find a PDF file which instructs you how to properly calibrate your audio in post-production and on your master control system.

Download this PDF file (currently in draft format) which will help guide you through audio calibration. Please note that if you have the reference DVD or one of the files below, you don't have to go through the non-linear section (you just need to edit at finalize your programs in your NLE at -12db average audio). You can skip to calibrating your playout server on page 4.

PLEASE NOTE: If you create MPEG-2 files using Final Cut Pro and Compressor, you should be aware that Compressor adds 6db to EVERY file. This means you should add a -6db filter in Compressor (only available in Final Cut Studio 2 version), or else average your audio at -18db in Final Cut instead. It is recommened that you test which ever method you choose to employ.

If you would like to check your work or have a final product to start from, you can request a reference level DVD from Scott if you don't already have one by clicking here. You can also download a reference level MPEG-2 file using Pando (explained below).

You will need to download Pando (free) in order to get the reference MPEG-2 file. You will also be required to use Pando to send us your completed MPEG-2 video that is correctly calibrated.

1. Download and install Pando for free here (available for both Mac and Windows)
2. After you've installed Pando, you can download the -12db reference file in Pando. You should be able to click either link below and have it start to download in Pando directly, but if you experience problems you can watch this screencast for help.
- Download the Quicktime reference file
- Download the MPEG-2 reference file
3. When you are ready to send your MPEG-2 file, please follow the steps in the following video tutorial. Please note you will need a password to view this video, so you first need to email Scott to get the password. Once you have the password, click here to view the video, and enter the password when prompted. The video is password-protected as it contains certain information that cannot be made available to the public.
